Painting the Kimberley: Boab Trees, Portraits & Stories from the Heart of Australia
The Kimberley region of Western Australia is one of the most breathtaking and unique landscapes on Earth. From the iconic Gibb River Road to the remote beauty of Kalumburu, El Questro, Home
Valley Station, Digger’s Rest, Kununurra, the Bungle Bungles, Mitchell Falls, and King George Falls—the inspiration for painting here is endless.
Among all these wonders, one subject stands out as a consistent favourite: the boab tree. I’ve painted countless boabs over the years, and it never gets old. The Adansonia gregorii, often called
the Kimberley Tree of Life, is deeply symbolic—its bark, leaves, and nuts have traditionally been used for food, medicine and shelter by Aboriginal people. These trees hold stories, and I feel
incredibly connected to each one I paint.
While landscape and nature are central to my work, I also love painting portraits—especially of elders with expressive lines etched by time and life. The portrait process always begins with a
conversation. Hearing people’s stories as I photograph and paint them is the most rewarding part.
Some of the most meaningful works I’ve created are portraits, painted with permission from the subjects. I feel honoured to have captured the presence and strength of these individuals, and grateful for the connections formed through art. Every person, like every tree, has a story—and painting those stories is what I love most.
